a breakthrough to limit the damage caused by going over the fiscal cliff. overnight, the senate passed a measure that will keep taxes the same for about 98% of americans. that vote came at about 2:00 a.m. a couple of hours after we officially went over the cliff. now, this deal has bipartisan support in the senate. 89 senators voted in favor of it. just eight voted against it. under this deal, taxes will remain the same for americans who earn less than $400,000 a year and families that make less than $450,000. it would also extend long-term unemployment benefits. about $24 billion in spending cuts would be delayed for two months. so the white house and congress can have more time to debate them. democrats and republicans agreed to a compromise. they say not acting could have had devastating consequences. >> we don't think taxes should be going up on anyone. but we all knew that if we did nothing, they'd be going up on everyone. >> it is now up to the house to vote on the proposal. president obama released a statement shortly after the senate voted that read
